Macrium Reflect is intuitively designed and organised with simple to follow wizards guiding you through tasks. If you have never used backup software before, however, you might feel some trepidation, needing a little extra guidance to get you started. Alternatively, you might be ready to use Macrium Reflect's more sophisticated features such as backup scheduling. Accessing the following tasks is explained so that you can optimize your use of Macrium Reflect, regardless of you backup experience.

Rescue Media

It is recommended that the first time you use Macrium Reflect, you create bootable rescue media before performing any other tasks.

Click the create bootable Rescue media icon to access the wizard.

For further guidance see Creating rescue media.

Disk Imaging

File and Folder Backup

Select the files and folders you want to backup, apply filtering criteria to include and exclude files and folders, and Reflect creates a compressed backup file that can be restored directly or browsed using Windows Explorer.

You can create full, differential, and incremental backups to optimize backup speed and disk space requirements.

Cloning

Clone your system disks to ensure that you are able to hot swap failed disks out of your system and get things back up and running again in minutes.

Scheduling for backup cycles

Macrium Reflect™ provides daily, weekly, and monthly backup cycles that allow you to pick which days and times you want your backups to run. Scheduled backups run independently of whether anyone is logged into the computer.

VBScript and MS-DOS batch file support

Macrium Reflect™ stores backup definitions as XML files that are accessed to provide powerful batch and scheduling processing using VBScript or MS DOS batch files.

Reflect includes a powerful VBScript generator that creates Windows Scripting Host (WScript) VBScript files for programmable control over your backup cycles.

Redeploy

From the rescue environment you can launch Macrium ReDeploy to adapt the recovered Windows system to its new environment whether that is a virtual machine or a different computer.

Recovery Media - Windows PE 3.1, 4.0, or 5.0

In the event of a total loss of the Windows operating system, a PC can be started using the Macrium Reflect recovery media on CD, DVD, or USB stick.

The recovery media starts a compact operating system with a familiar mouse and graphical interface called Windows Preinstallation Environment (PE). You can then recover partitions, entire disk images or individual files with just a few clicks of the mouse.
