SiteDeploy® – Includes anything in the ‘Deployment’ section of the central management console.

Site Manager – Anything, excluding the ‘Deployment’ section of the central management console. Can be used generally to refer to the central management console, e.g. “Log in to Site Manager from the PE Agent”.

Deployment operator – The person performing the deployment, whether this is endpoint initiated or centrally initiated.

Deploy media – media used for deployment, applies to both PXE and deployment media. Created using the ‘Deployment’ menu.

Rescue media – Media used for recovery. Created using the ‘Rescue Media’ tab of Site Manager. Not to be confused with Deploy Media (even though they are functionally the same).

PXE Components – The components that are created using the ‘PXE Network Boot Components’ in the ‘Deploy Media’ page.

Reference Computer – The preprepared computer that is used during golden image creation.

Golden Image – An image that will be deployed to multiple computers. Generally, an image of a reference computer.

Target computer – The computer(s) that will have the golden image deployed to them.

Target Initiated Deployment – A deployment that is initiated using the PE Agent, started by the user at the target computer.

Centrally Initiated Deployment – A deployment that is initiated using the central console.

Deployment Environment – WinPE-based environment that is booted into using the deployment media.

Deployment Target – A computer that has been booted into the deployment environment and is ready to have a golden image deployed to it.

Rescue Environment – PE environment that is booted into using rescue media (distinct from the deployment environment).

Managed Computer – A computer that has been identified and connected to Site Manager for centrally managed backups.

Central Management Console – The Site Manager and SiteDeploy® interface. Refers to anything that is configured or monitored in the central console, sometimes called the Site Manager console.

Golden Image Store – A predefined storage location that is used to store golden images, not to be confused with a repository.

Windows Answer File – An XML file that can be included in a golden image to perform post-deployment tasks like renaming the computer.

PXE Server – A combination of a TFTP server and a DHCP server that work together to offer bootable WIMs across the network to a computer. In SiteDeploy® PXE is used to boot the deployment media across the network. Although PXE is a combination of TFTP and DHCP working together, PXE is the generally used term.

TFTP – A file transfer protocol that is used in the PXE spec to send bootable WIMs across the network.

Sysprep – Sysprep is a tool that is provided by Microsoft and can be used to generalize a computer prior to image creation.

Audit Mode – Audit mode, is an option in Sysprep that enables changes to be made prior to the generalization running.

OOBE – The Out of Box Experience (OOBE) is the first time set up that Windows enters when booted following Sysprep.

Answer File – An answer file is an XML file that contains information that can be used when the deployed operating system starts, to autocomplete parts of the OOBE, e.g. naming the computer.
