There are certain rules that that must be adhered to when translating terms. Translations that break the rules will be rejected.

Format  Specifiers

Certain terms have specifiers, or placeholders, to insert other words and numbers in the text. Specifiers are always preceded by % and may contain a number, as well as a letter afterwards.

e.g.

Image %sCompleted %s in %s

Translates in French to:

Image %sterminée %s en %s

Note: The same number of format specifiers must be present in the translation, and if there are multiple specifier types then they must be in the same sequence, with the same spaces before and/or after.

Format  specifier examples

Retrying file copy, attempts remaining: %d

Start Sector %I64d

%d%% Completed   (Note:  %% is not a format specifier. Double % means a single % is displayed in the text)

This dialog will close in %i seconds

Failed to seek to offset %I64x. Last error = %u

Ampersand '&' character

Some terms include a single & character in the English text.  & is defined as a keyboard accelerator, and is used in Windows to enable menu navigation and selection by using the keyboard.

e.g.

Spaces Before and After

Certain terms are required to have one or more spaces before and/or after the text. This is shown in POEditor as a _ (underscore character) in the visualization of the term. You must ensure that the same spacing is observed in translations.

e.g.

There must be a space before the beginning of this translated text.

Phrase and word lengthWhere possible, translated words and phrases should take up no more space than the English words. If translations are too wide then there may not be enough space in the layout to view the text without truncation.  Always check the length of the translation and re-phrase and/or abbreviate where possible.

Translations that are too long and cannot be displayed correctly will be rejected.
