  1. Run an elevated MS-DOS command prompt as follows: 
    1. For Vista/7/8 and Server 2008 and later Servers :
      1. If required, press keyboard Windows key.
      2. Type command.
      3. Right-click Command Prompt.
      4. From menu, click Run as administrator (in Windows 8, menu is at bottom of screen).
    2. For Windows XP and Server 2003: Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
       
  2. At the command prompt type: chkdsk <volume drive letter> /r /f 
     

  3. If you receive the message Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time your system restarts?

    1. Press Y.

    2. Enter.
       

    Your entire file system checks for errors. This may take some time to complete.
