A Macrium Reflect scheduled backup uses the standard Windows Task Scheduler to schedule backups and disk images. If Macrium Reflect is unable to run then a result/return code is passed to the the task scheduler to indicate the failure cause. The possible return codes for Macrium Reflect are:

0x00 - The backup was successful
0x01 - User cancelled or other error during image creation. See log.
0x02 - The XML definition file had errors or could not be loaded

This article explains the common causes for error code 0x02 when running scheduled backups.

You should save the XML file to a local drive not the destination folder of the backup.

The XML file is not used for restoring an Image or backup file and must be accessible to Macrium Reflect when the program starts. The default location is '<USER DOCUMENTS>\Reflect'

The XML file cannot be found

If the XML file has been deleted or renamed then it cannot be loaded. To check the path that the scheduled task is referencing:

1. Click the 'Scheduled Backups' tab

2. Double click the scheduled task in error to open the edit wizard.
3. Click 'Next' until you reach the final wizard page...

Check that the path for the XML file is correct and that the file exists on your file system.

The user running the scheduled task does not have read/write privileges for the backup destination.
A common mistake is to schedule your backup task for the wrong user account.

1. Click the 'Scheduled Backup' tab and check the 'User Account' column for the failing backup.

Check that the DOMAIN\USER is the correct account and has read/write privileges to the backup destination folder.

A common mistake is to schedule your backups for a domain user but when you logon to Windows you use your local user account.

Local and domain users with the same name are different user accounts with different access privileges.'

To change the user account for a scheduled backup.

1. Take the 'Other Tasks' > 'Defaults' menu option, then select 'Scheduled Tasks' >? 'User Name'

If necessary, correct the default DOMAIN\USER and enter the logon password.

2. After updating the user account you need to edit existing scheduled tasks to update the user account for the tasks. Double click each scheduled task in the list view and step through the wizard to the end and click 'Finish'

You must edit your existing scheduled tasks to reflect changes to the default scheduled tasks user account.

If you don't do this then the tasks will continue to run with the incorrect account
