Viewing and Managing Computers

Remote computers are viewed and managed from the 'Computers' page of the Management Console, under the 'Setup' heading on the left hand side column. This page displays a list of all managed computers and relevant status information:

This view is divided into a number of tabs, each representing a set of computers in particular states. Underneath the tab, there is a toolbar with functions appropriate to each state.

Common Toolbar Buttons

Each tab shares four common toolbar buttons. They are:

  • Add - Adds new computers to the Management Console. See the section later on this page for details.
  • Remove - Removes selected computers from the Management Console
  • Refresh - Updates computer data from the selected computers
  • View Log - Shows backup, restore and clone logs from the selected computer in the View Logs page

Additional Toolbar Buttons

Each tab has a set of additional options for recovering agents in that state. The list of tabs, description of what each state means and which toolbar options are available is listed below:

TabDescriptionAdditional Toolbar Buttons
AllAll computers in the Management Console are shown in this view.None - to recover computers in error states, first go to the tab for that specific error.
ManagedThe computer is online and running a remote agent. This includes agents which are being automatically upgraded and appear with the status Upgrading Agent.None - computers in the Managed state are working correctly. Upgrading Agent computers will change state when they either complete or fail their upgrade process.
UnlicensedThe computer does not have an appropriate standalone or Macrium Agent License.

  • Add Key is a shortcut to the licenses page where an appropriate key can be entered to provide Macrium Agent Licenses. Alternatively, if a copy of Macrium Reflect is installed on an Unlicensed computer, it will change state to Managed.
UnauthorizedThe secure passphrase saved for this computer does not match the passphrase used by the computer.

  • Set Passphrase allows the passphrase for the selected agent to be updated to the one used installing the Agent. If the passphrase set on the server and the agent match, the computer will enter the Managed state.
  • Install Agent allows the agent software to be reinstalled on the selected computers. This is useful when the passphrase has been forgotten or is out of date.
No AgentThe computer is online but not running a Macrium Remote Agent. Agents which are being installed remotely in this list appear with the status Installing Agent.

  • Install Agent allows the agent software to be installed on the selected computers remotely. Alternatively follow the section blow on manually installing the agent.

Installing Agent computers will change state when they either complete or fail their install process.

UnmanagedThe computer is online and running a remote agent, but not configured to be managed by this server.

Computers in this state should be automatically brought into the Managed state by the Management Console unless the computer is being managed by another Management Console server. If this is the case, the Status column will read "Managed by SERVERNAME" where SERVERNAME is the NetBIOS of the CMC server managing the computer.

To actively take control of the agent, select the agent and press the Refresh button.

OfflineThe computer could not be found on the network.Offline computers can be brought into other states by either connecting the computer to the network or resolving network issues preventing the server and agent from communicating.

Computer Details

Each managed computer row can be expanded to show detailed information on the computer. To open or close the computer detail information, click the '?' marker on the left hand side of the computer row. The information is divided into tabs, as follows:

The disks and partitions on the computer are shown here, to help in determining how and what to backup from this computer should be.

The legacy tab contains information from agents about legacy Macrium Reflect installations. This tab is included to help with the transition of backup scheduling from being locally scheduled on each computer to being centrally scheduled on the Management Console.

A list of .xml backup definitions and script files stored locally on the computer are listed here and may be run manually from the Management Console with the 'Run Now' option.

After pressing 'Run Now' a dialog will pop up to select the type of backup (Usually Full, Differential or Incremental but may have other options for different backup types) and confirm the backup:

Adding a new client to the Management Console

Please ensure you have followed the steps in section Remote Agent Prerequisites before attempting to add any remote computer.

Using the Add button on the toolbar in any tab of the computers view will display a list of computers discovered on the network. Populating the list may take some time depending on the network. The list appears as below:

The interface has the following elements:

  • List of computers - check the boxes next to each name to select this computer to add. The computer lust will show whether the computer has an Agent for remote management installed already.
  • Search box - this box allows you to filter the computer list. Only computers whose names contain the text in this box will be shown in the list.
  • 'Add Unlisted Computers' - if the computer to be added is not in the network list, this button will allow you to manually add a computer by netbios name
  • '+ Add' button - If computers are selected by checkbox, this button will add all of them to the Management Console.

Once the computer have been selected, the dialog will show progress and the result of adding them:

The 'Back to the list' button allows you to add more computers or press 'Done' to close the dialog and return to the computers page. The computers page will show computers which have been added to the Management Console. The lists can be sorted, filtered and have additional columns displayed by using the dropdown menu icons on each column heading:

Once computers have been added, the Macrium Agent software must be installed on the computer and configured with an appropriate secure access token to be managed by the Management Console. This may be done automatically via the Management Console or manually.

Installing the Agent via Remote Install

If the Management Console is on a domain or the appropriate steps have been follow, the Agent software can be remotely installed on the client to be managed. See Remote Agent Prerequisites for more information.

Steps to Remote Install

Installation Credentials

Administrator level access to the computer is required to install an Agent. The Management Console will attempt to use the credentials used to log in to the Management Console if available. If the Management Console is configured to allow anonymous access, the installation process will prompt for credentials before attempting install.

  • Select the computers to perform a remote install on. These can be any in the Managed, Unauthorized or No Agent tabs.

  • Press the Install Agent or Reinstall Agent button in the toolbar

  • Select 'Confirm' in the dialog that pops up to attempt install or cancel to exit
  • The Management Console will attempt the install and show the status of each computer. Wait for the install attempts to complete
  • Once each install has finished, the status will be displayed. If all computers succeeded then only 'Done' will be available

Problems with Remote Installation

If there are any issues in installing the Remote Computers, this will be shown in the results:

The Management Console can retry all installs that failed simultaneously via the 'Retry Failed Installs' button or on an individual computer basis by using the 'Retry' buttons in the table next to the install status.

If retrying the installation on a computer (or computers) which failed the install due to credential errors, the Console will prompt for new credentials:

Once new credentials have been entered and 'OK' pressed, the Management Comsole will attempt reinstallation using the new credentials.

Other possible errors are:

Install ErrorDescriptionRecommended Action
No Credentials AvailableThe installation cannot proceed because there are no cached credentials to try. This only occurs when attempting the install when the Management Console is set to allow anonymous login and the passowrd prompt is cancelled on attempting the installRetry the install and enter credentials when prompted
Credentials Rejected

None of the entered or cached credentials were accepted by the computer as valid.

This may occur if the computer is not part of a domain and the computer is configured to only allow unelevated access remotely. See Remote Agent Prerequisites for more information

Retry the install with different credentials or attempt a manual installation.
Remote Install Not AvailableThe install process connected to the WMI server successfully, but the WMI installer component is not installed. This typically occurs on Windows XP machines as later editions have this component installed automatically. See Remote Agent Prerequisites for more information.Install the Remote Installer WMI component on the remote machine and try again.
WMI Not AvailableCould not find a WMI process to connect to. Either the computer is offline, not a Windows machine or WMI remote access is blocked for security reasonsCheck the computer status and try again or manually install the agent.
Operating System too oldThe computer connected but is below the Windows version required for the Agent.Upgrade the OS on the computer or use a different computer.
Installer Error - 1234The installer ran, but returned an error code and was not successful. The number in place of 1234 is the code from the installerContact Macrium support or try a manual install.
Install FailedA general failure in installation.Retry the install or contact Macrium support.

Installing the Agent Manually

If Remote Install is not available, the Agent can be installed manually. See Manually installing the remote agent for more details.

To proceed in the Management Console, the passphrase used during the manual installation (if one was used) is required.

Once the manual install has finished, the Management Console will connect to the client and change state. If any passphrase except the default one was used during the manual install, the computer's status will be listed as Unauthorized. A computer with this state cannot establish secure communications or participate in scheduled backups until the passphrase is set correctly.

To set the passphrase, select the computer in the Unauthorized tab by checking the appropriate box in the computers list and press the Set Passphrase button. This will open the passphrase editing dialog:

To set a passphrase, uncheck the 'Use default passphrase' box and enter the passphrase in the box. Press OK to apply the passphrase.

If the passphrase is correct, the computer will connect and enter the 'Managed' state. If it is incorrect an error will be shown:

Passphrases in Remote Install

When installing the Agent remotely. the install process automatically creates a unique passphrase for the computer and sets it on both the Agent and the Management Console.

Removing Clients from the Management Console

To remove computers from the Management Console, select the computers to remove from any tab via the checkboxes and press the Remove button in the toolbar:

This will bring up a confirmation dialog box, including information of any computers which are part of currently scheduled backups or Backup Definitions:

To remove these computers, press Confirm.
